The small Andean country of Ecuador is the third most bird-diverse country in the world, and by far the most diverse in terms of species per area. Unfortunately, with that incredible diversity comes an equally high number of threatened species - it has over 95 globally threatened birds, putting it fifth in the world for threatened species. Of those 95 species, 8 are critically endangered, 20 endangered and 67 vulnerable. Plus it has an added 78 that are near-threatened.

We have brought you this App, with a small cross-section of Ecuador’s threatened birds, in the hope to raise awareness of the threats that this diversity faces. We have used the critically important IUCN Red-List (compiled in conjunction with Birdlife) as our source for this data, and urge people to support and investigate these two unparalleled resources in the hope to change the conservation paradigm.

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species was formed 40 years ago, and has become the most comprehensive resource detailing the global conservation status of plants and animals. It has become an increasingly powerful tool for conservation planning, management, monitoring and decision making on all levels; as it highlights species that are at the greatest risk of extinction and promotes their conservation by concentrating efforts on true priorities. This immense achievement is still primarily fueled by the enthusiasm and combined efforts of the thousands of dedicated experts worldwide who, in spite of severely limited resources, go beyond the call of duty to prevent (or at least highlight) global biodiversity loss.

We offer our gratitude and respect to all they do for conservation, and remind people that the only way we can reverse these alarming statistics is if we all play a role in making change.
